The Level 3 Water Treatment Technician Apprenticeship at The S&A Academy provides apprentices with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to ensure the safe and efficient treatment of water in a variety of industries, including utilities, environmental services, manufacturing, and healthcare.

Apprentices will learn to monitor and maintain water treatment systems, conduct laboratory testing, analyse water quality data, and ensure compliance with environmental and regulatory standards. The curriculum follows a structured sequence, starting with core principles of water chemistry, filtration, and disinfection before progressing to advanced treatment technologies, system optimisation, and fault diagnosis.

L3 Water Treatment Technician Apprenticeship

The S&A Science Academy are the UK leaders for Water Treatment Apprenticeships. We have taken our experience in delivering Science apprenticeships over the last 10 years in developing bespoke Water Treatment Apprenticeships.

Blended delivery online and in person on site taking place 1-day per week over 15 months – available for employers across the UK.

We also offer employer specific customisation of our apprenticeship programmes. Useful to add additional modules, or blend other training, such as management skills or training on your particular type of equipment, into our overall delivery programmes.

L3 Water Treatment Technician

Program Structure

Duration: 15-18 months

Format: Training is delivered through a combination of, specialist workshops, online learning and onsite training with expert guidance from industry professionals and technical mentors. Apprentices will also develop essential problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills, preparing them for a successful career in the sector.

Assessment: End Point Assessment of Knowledge test, Observation and Professional discussion supported by a portfolo

Certification: Apprentices will receive a Level 3 qualification on completion of the programme.

Core Knowledge

Understand Safe and Professional working practices including relevant industry health & safety standards, regulations, organisational procedures and safety requirements etc.

Advanced requirements, principles and risks involved with the operation of water systems including potential problems, hazards and the risks to health, efficiency and system integrity.

Chemical reactions involved in the corrosion and scaling processes in water systems

Inhibition methods for the reduction of corrosion of different metals including steel, copper and aluminium in water systems

Inhibition methods for the reduction of different scale types in specific water systems including cooling towers, steam boilers and manufacturing processes, etc.

Cell structure of waterborne microbes and the interactions with biocidal products used to control them

The concepts of flow and heat transfer in water systems and how they affect water treatment processes

Ion transfer technologies, including resin and membrane based systems, used to change water quality

The use of specialised analytical equipment for the testing in field of water samples including digital titration, colorimeters and photometers
