The Level 4 Data Protection & Information Governance Practitioner programme develops professionals who can manage organisational data lawfully, securely, and in line with regulation. Learners gain practical experience in compliance, risk management, and information governance, helping organisations protect sensitive data and meet legal responsibilities.

Apprentices learn how to implement effective governance practices, manage data protection risks, and support organisations in maintaining trust, transparency, and regulatory compliance.

Regulation, Risk and Governance

Apprentices develop a strong understanding of data protection legislation and information governance frameworks. They learn how to support organisational policies, manage regulatory responsibilities, and identify risks related to the handling of data and information assets.

Data Protection in Practice

Learners gain practical experience in managing information requests, maintaining records and retention schedules, and supporting data breach investigations and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs). This ensures organisations meet legal obligations and maintain robust privacy controls.

Insight, Communication and Improvement

Apprentices learn how to analyse data governance risks, communicate guidance to internal stakeholders, and support audits, reporting, and continuous improvement across the organisation’s information management practices.

Delivery Model

Months 0–15

The programme combines:

  • Live remote workshops

  • Online self-paced learning

  • Workplace projects

  • Mentoring and coaching

  • Independent study and day-release learning

Apprentices apply their learning through real workplace scenarios, building practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge.

Months 15–18

Apprentices complete their End Point Assessment (EPA) to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours.

The EPA includes:

  • Knowledge tests

  • Professional discussion

  • Work-based evidence and portfolio review

Data Protection and Legal Frameworks

Introduction to UK and international data protection legislation, regulatory responsibilities, and the principles of lawful data processing.

Records and Information Management

Learn how to manage organisational records effectively, including retention policies, data classification, and lifecycle management of information.

Data Subject Rights, FOI and EIR

Understand how to manage information requests, including Subject Access Requests (SARs), Freedom of Information (FOI), and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR).

Risk Management, DPIAs and Breaches

 

Develop skills to identify data protection risks, conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), and support organisations in responding to data breaches.

Data Governance Strategy and Reporting

 

Explore how organisations implement governance frameworks, monitor compliance, and report on information governance performance.

Communication, Training and Stakeholder Engagement

 

Learn how to communicate data protection requirements across the organisation through training, guidance, and stakeholder engagement.
